The Little Mussel Cafe
Tracy Bold, owner operator of The Little Mussel Café in Portarlington, will never suffer from empty nest syndrome. When three of her children left home she decided to bottle and sell some of the mussels her husband Peter owner of Advance Mussel Supply farm gate produce had left over as she hates waste and loves cooking.
“The café just evolved with people wanting to buy mussels and requesting recipes,” said Tracy. “It now has an enclosed indoor area featuring an educational mussel production video and a pleasant outside seating area near the herb garden so you can enjoy your mussels in the sun. All our products are hand made on site.”
The Little Mussel Café with a big personality offers Mussel Chowder, Mussel Tasting Plates, Chilli Mussels; Oysters with lemon, Oysters Kilpatrick, Arancini balls; calamari or nuggets and chips for the kids, freshly brewed coffee and delicious cakes. Local wines, cider and beers on offer include Mussel Stout from the Bellarine Brewery.
You can also buy fresh Portarlington mussels by the kilo or by the box, freshly shucked Portarlington Angasi Oysters, soused mussels, smoked Mussels and Jerky mussels to take away.
The mussels are grown in Port Philip Bay, Clifton Springs and Grassy Point. Mussels are a type of clam whose flesh has a mild, salty flavor that make for a decadent yet healthful addition to your diet. They’re versatile in the kitchen and they work well in salads, soups or as a topping for pasta.
“The shop has been open for 5 years now,” said Tracy. “And in that time locals and visitors ride their bikes here or take the Bongo scenic tour finishing with lunch here.”
For the rest of us it’s just a short, pleasant drive away. Make it your next stop for morning or afternoon tea or a delicious lunch.
The Little Mussel Cafe Winter opening hours are Thursday 10-3, Friday 11-4, Saturday and Sunday 10am til 5pm, most public holidays and seven days a week over Christmas and Easter Holidays.
