The Q Train – a journey of delights

Drysdale was buzzing Saturday night the 23rd of September with the launch of The Q Train, a progressive dinner train serving a 6 course degustation menu. The menu is complemented with local produce from farms and suppliers of the region. “A true complement to the taste trail, and supporting local business is double bonus,” said Emma Atkinson Marketing Co-coordinator.

Local Suppliers, Business Owners, Media and Tourism Representatives boarded the train at Drysdale to experience a truly unique dinner train experience. Award Winning Head Chef Greg Egan served his modern Australian themed menu with Asian influences to train and food enthusiasts as they travelled between Drysdale and Queenscliff.

Greg, a winner of Best Chef and Golden Plate awards, said feedback has been positive. He has relished the opportunity to create a menu that not only showcases local produce, but can be cooked in the restricted environment that a kitchen on board a train presents. “People love the idea of going out for a quality meal while enjoying the beautiful, calm scenery as The Q Train travels around Swan Bay.”

The Degustation Menu included House Made Ricotta with Wattle Grove Lucerne honey, prosciutto, snow pea, asparagus, steamed quail egg. Sage Farm Salted Beef, Portarlington Mussels with Vietnamese salad, Barongarook Port belly and soy caramel, Sage Farm Lamb Two Ways and red pepper puree, Wattle Grove Honey & Chocolate parfait, toasted sesame, candied citrus zest, orange blossem honey curd. Not all the ingredients have been listed but you’ve been given a taste. Diners all agreed that the food was beyond delicious.

Emma explained how the idea for The Q Train came about. “A couple of years ago Andrew Bridger and Michael Barclay, who’d worked with trains for the better part of 50 years, purchased several historic carriages from Queensland Rail. They have spent the last year or so refurbishing the old carriages trans-forming part of the old ‘Sunlander’ into a new boutique rail, The Q Train. How’s that for recycling!

They sought the expertise of a hospitality pundit, and their team was created. “As long term home owners on the Bellarine Peninsula, we dreamed of creating a Restaurant Train to showcase the beautiful Bellarine and Swan Bay scenery, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. The Q Train is the realisation of this and we are proud to share this vision with Geelong, The Bellarine and beyond.”

The Q Train will operate Thursday, Friday and Saturday Weekly departing Drysdale Rail-way Station. Book your experience now at www.theqtrain.com.au
