Full steam ahead for Adam Sandry at the Bellarine Railway!

A volunteer well travelled

Queenscliff’s historic Bellarine Railway attracts volunteers from far and wide, but Adam Sandry aged 26, is the winner of the most kilometres travelled stakes.

Adam, a fitter and machinist, hails from Richmond NSW and has formerly worked at the Zig Zag Railway in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. I sat down for a chat with Adam recently and learned that by attending a training course being at the Bellarine Railway he would gain his ticket in boilers and reciprocating engines.

“I loved the unique variety of steam and diesel engines and made some great friends,” explained Adam. “So, I decided to become a volunteer. I stay in the residence at the Queenscliff Station.”

Adam’s volunteering includes Steam and Diesel locomotive driver, Train Guard, Track worker and fitter, Rolling Stock Manager and he’s director on the board.

“My favourite role is driving the train and working with people. I enjoy the Day out with Thomas events, the Blues Train and seeing excited faces on the train driver experience runs,” said Adam who recently began employment at Sovereign Hill as a steam engine driver.

I asked if he had a message for potential volunteers. “Come and join us! If you can spare a little or a lot of your time, or whether you are female or male we would love to see you here. It’s a very rewarding place to be. Seeing happy children alone is worth all the effort.”
